What you need to know

As a state institution, UNC-Chapel Hill is responsible for ensuring that all required workplace postings are up-to-date and available to all employees. The United States Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC) has released an updated Know Your Rights: Workplace Discrimination is Illegal poster, outlining information on federal laws prohibiting job discrimination. The EEOC released an updated version on June 27, 2023 to reflect new implementation of the Pregnant Workers Fairness Act (PWFA). This federal law established new accommodation requirements for pregnant workers. The PWFA requires employers (such as UNC-Chapel Hill) to provide “reasonable accommodations” for workers with known limitations related to pregnancy, childbirth, or related medical conditions.

Why this information is important to display

The poster shares information about discrimination based on:

  • Race
  • Color
  • National origin
  • Religion Age (40 and older),
  • Disability,
  • Sex (including pregnancy and related conditions, sexual orientation, or gender identity)
  • Genetic information (including family medical history or genetic tests or services)
  • Retaliation for filing a charge, reasonably opposing discrimination, or participating in a discrimination lawsuit, investigation, or proceeding.

Reporting options for employees who have discrimination concerns are also provided. Federal law requires workplace posters to be displayed in noticeable locations where they are easily visible to all employees. The EEOC allows electronic posting to supplement, but not replace, physical posting.  For full-time telework employees who do not visit the workplace on a regular basis, it may be the only available posting.

Pay Transparency Nondiscrimination

Federal contractors are required to post the Pay Transparency Nondiscrimination Provision and include it in employee handbooks and manuals. Contractors must place the Pay Transparency Nondiscrimination Provision somewhere that it is conspicuously available to all applicants and employees. Contractors can post this provision either physically on the premises or electronically.
