A federal law took effect in June setting out new accommodation requirements for pregnant workers. The Pregnant Workers Fairness Act (also known as the PWFA) requires employers (such as UNC-Chapel Hill) to provide “reasonable accommodations” for workers with known limitations related to pregnancy, childbirth, or related medical conditions. Examples of PWFA accommodations include parking assistance, additional break time, appropriately sized uniforms, being excused from strenuous activities, and more.

Pregnant employees in need of parking accommodations can submit their request through UNC Transportation and Parking.

To request all other accommodations related to pregnancy, please visit the accommodation request section of our website.

Carolina employees can email accommodations@unc.edu with any questions.

More information on the Pregnant Workers Fairness Act can be found by visiting the website of the United States Equal Opportunity Employment Commission.

The EOC’s newly designed lactation website includes information on campus lactation rooms, expectations for managers of employees who are lactating, how to create a lactation room, and frequently asked questions. Please visit go.unc.edu/lactation for more information.
