Annual ceremony returns after pandemic hiatus.

The Equal Opportunity and Compliance Office (EOC) joined several campus stakeholders for a Veteran’s Day event honoring Carolina’s military heroes. UNC’s Tar Heel Tribute, which was paused for 3 years due to the COVID-19 pandemic, returned to the Friday Center on Friday, November 10, 2023. Sponsored by the Carolina Veterans Resource Center and Division of Human Resources and Equal Opportunity and Compliance, the ceremony honored UNC-Chapel Hill’s active and retired military veterans. EOC’s very own investigator and Army veteran, Jaclyn Feeney, presented a tribute to service men and women missing in action and prisoners of war. Dr. Perrin Jones, U.S. Navy Reserve and University Board of Trustee member, served as the ceremony’s keynote speaker. Remarks were also given by Chancellor Kevin Guskiewicz and Becci Menghini, vice chancellor for human resources and equal opportunity and compliance. Members of the UNC ROTC programs presented the colors.

The Tar Heel Tribute ceremony serves as a small token of the University’s appreciation, according to Elizabeth Hall, associate vice chancellor for equal opportunity and compliance and the University’s Title IX coordinator. “We are forever grateful for the sacrifices and contributions our military veterans and their families have made for UNC-Chapel Hill and our entire nation. With the Tar Heel Tribute, we honor their service and express our appreciation.”

Veterans learned about the various resources and support options available from offices represented at the Tar Heel Tribute’s resource fair. Representatives included Dean of Students Office, Office of Human Resources, and EOC.

The Equal Opportunity and Compliance Office provides accommodations to disabled military veterans. Please visit go.unc.edu/accommodations or email accommodations@unc.edu to learn more about the available support.
