(June 15, 2020) – In a historical decision, the Supreme Court voted 6-to-3 to extend protections against employment discrimination to the LGBTQ community under Title VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964, which prohibits workplace discrimination on the basis of race, sex, religion or national origin. Before the decision, It was legal in more than half of the states to fire someone for being gay, bisexual or transgender. Now, the federal law will protect those employees from firing and other employment decisions based on their sexual orientation or gender identity.

The Equal Opportunity and Compliance Office fully supports this decision from the Supreme Court and stands by our LGBTQ community at Carolina. Our office is committed to equal employment opportunity for all and believe this ruling is a step in the direction of equality and justice for LGBTQ students, faculty, and staff.
