On February 13, 2020, UNC welcomed Dr. Jennifer S. Hirsch and Shamus Khan, authors of the newly released book, “Sexual Citizens: A Landmark Study of Sex, Power, and Assault on Campus” to campus as a part of their book tour. Around 70 people attended the event in the Carolina Union Auditorium, spanning from a number of departments, schools, and organizations across campus. The event began with opening remarks and introductions by Becci Menghini, Vice Chancellor of the Division of Human Resources and Equal Opportunity and Compliance. Becci then handed the microphone off to the event’s moderator, Dr. Helyne Frederick, a Clinical Associate Professor in the UNC School of Education. Dr. Frederick and the authors discussed the motivation behind the research in the book, the different intersectional ties between sexual assault and race, gender, economic background, sexual orientation, among others, and how culture, traditions, and education all play a factor in sexual assault. Dr. Frederick then opened the discussion up to the audience who were able to ask questions to the authors via floating microphones or text in questions through Poll Everywhere. A small reception, book sales and signing took place after the event.
