HAVEN (Helping Advocates for Violence Ending Now) is a skills based training providing students, faculty, staff and other members of the Carolina community the opportunity to explore and build the ‘tools’ needed to be an ally to someone who has experienced sexual or interpersonal (relationship) violence or stalking.
HAVEN provides workshop participants information about the various support and reporting options available to individuals impacted by violence – and participants have the opportunity to explore the importance of listening, responding compassionately, and looking into ways one might connect survivors to the various support and reporting options available to students and employees on campus and in the Chapel Hill community.
HAVEN is traditionally offered as an in-person, three-hour training program. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic and subsequent safety measures, the Equal Opportunity and Compliance Office (EOC), which hosts the HAVEN program, has been unable to offer HAVEN to the Carolina community in this in-person format.
However, EOC staff worked to reconfigure the HAVEN training and we’re happy to report that HAVEN is now being offered once again but in a ‘virtual’ format. The online version of HAVEN is delivered in two on-hour session for a total of a two hour training.
Part one is a prerecorded presentation reviewing the University’s Policy on Prohibited Discrimination, Harassment and Related Misconduct, defining sexual harassment, sexual misconduct, interpersonal violence, and stalking. The first part of the HAVEN program also covers confidential support and private reporting options available to Carolina students, faculty, and staff.
The second part of the ‘virtual’ HAVEN program is live – a small group of participants will meet via Zoom with EOC facilitators to discuss ways one can respond to a disclosure of violence. There will also be the opportunity to practice our listing and response skills and explore several scenarios as a kind of ‘rehearsal-for-real-life”.
